Localization

Localization (l10n) – lok’alai’z eI-shun (noun.) - localize (verb): to make information, (e.g documents or notices) pertinent to, and appropriate for, a specific region or area; making something from a different region easily understandable and acceptable by inhabitants of the target region; changing phrases, expressions, idioms etc to suit local language, social and cultural norms.

Internationalization (i18n) – inter’næʃn əl aɪz eI-shun (noun) - internationalize (verb): to prepare documentation, information, software or products originating in one region of the world, for conversion and localization (qv) for use in another region with different languages, behavior and cultural norms, without the need for redevelopment.

Localization (l10n)

With the rise of globalization, local knowledge is invaluable to the success of operating in a foreign country or to closing an international business deal.

Achieving your objectives is going to require a lot more than just translating your user manual into a foreign language. You will need Localization the SimpliWise way; adapting a product, service or system and everything connected to it – software, user interfaces, on-line help, documents, instructions, packaging, marketing material etc – to not only the language, but also the idiosyncrasies and cultural distinctiveness of the target market or region.

This simply means wisely matching the product to the target market and converting phrases and idioms into locally understood and regularly used expressions; it means understanding that Spanish in Spain and Argentina, French in France and Quebec or even English in South Africa and Australia, require completely different approaches; that the use of terms for business, currency, taxation, colors, environment and more, are unique for each region.

Internationalization (i18n)

This is the preliminary process of fully preparing the product and all its attributes, characteristics, accompanying documentation or packaging for localization. In the software industry for example, Internationalization prepares the software for localization so that there is no need for any additional development.
